Located in South Central Oklahoma, Garvin County, established at Statehood
was named for Samuel Garvin, a prominent Chickasaw Indian ,and was once a part
of the Chickasaw Indian Nation, Indian Territory. Pauls Valley, the county seat,
was named for Smith Paul, the first white settler in this part of the Washita
River Valley. In 1847, he described the area as "a section where the bottomland
was rich and bluestem grass grew so high that a man on horseback was almost
hidden in it's foliage".
The county is served by U.S. Highways 77 and 177 and Interstate 35. Amtrak's
Heartland Flyer stops at the restored Santa Fe Depot in Pauls Valley. Pauls
Valley Municipal Airport and a bus line also serve the county. The Washita River
meanders around Garvin County on 2 sides and Rush Creek on another making the
county one of the world's most fertile valleys. This area is rich in agriculture
and oil. Friendly folks still enjoy their porch swings and Sunday dinner after
church but can also be in Norman in 35 minutes or Dallas in 2 hours. Come enjoy
the best of both worlds with us!
